Engineers are racing to repair damaged flood defences before a new storm which threatens to bring more heavy rain.

The Environment Agency (EA) aims to finish repair work in Ironbridge, Shropshire, before Storm Jorge, which is due to strike within hours.

Tim Norton, from the agency, said: “We’re not out of the woods yet.”

A severe flood warning – meaning a danger to life – for the River Severn at Ironbridge was downgraded earlier on Friday.

In parts of East Yorkshire, residents were evacuated from their homes as flood water levels rose rapidly.
